Serving Lunch at St. Francis Table

Serving Lunch at St. Francis Table

All our Grade 11’s and some of our Grade 12’s travel to Parkdale to spend a few hours serving at St. Francis Table. Our first visit for 2019-20 was this past Friday September 20.

St. Francis Table is a welcoming place where people in need can come in and have a meal at lunch or dinner for only $1. It is not a soup kitchen, but instead is set up like a restaurant which means that the people who come in are served. Many of the people who take advantage of St. Francis Table are simply not able to get, or prepare, a hot meal. They can meet at “the Table”, to be served so that they do not have to eat alone.

Our students help to prepare the meals, serve them to the patrons and then help clean up and prepare for the next meal. As we do this, our students even have the opportunity to sit down and share some discussion time with the people we meet. It is a great opportunity for us to really experience the reality of life for so many people in Toronto, and to put into practice what we learn in school about serving others.
