Each year the school community pulls together during the Advent season to collect money and food for a local social service agency in the downtown core of the city of Toronto. As in years past, the food collected is donated to the Good Shepherd Centre. Located at Queen and Parliament Streets, the Centre serves over 500 meals a day to the homeless people of the area. In order to provide this vital service, they are in constant need of food donations from communities such as De La Salle. Additionally, this year we supported a charity called "Mary's Meals". This Catholic organization attempts to reach out to children in the developing world. In this way our Food Drive will feed people both locally and internationally.
This year the Lasallian Youth Team came together to build school spirit by challenging both the individual homeroom classes and the Houses to compete against one another to support the drive. Over the course of the two-week drive, our students surpassed our expectations and collected over 10,000 food items and money combined. Of the total raised, just over 3200 food items and $3300 were donated to Good Shepherd and just over $3300 was donated to Mary's Meals.
But we can't forget the winners of this "friendly" competition. Leading the Junior School (and really the entire student body) was Mrs. Wunder and the 7b class with just over 1000 items collected. In the Senior School we saw a back and forth between the senior science classes, with Mr. Vlahovic's Grade 12 Biology class taking the top spot with 488 items (between 16 students). These two classes were treated to a complimentary breakfast this week as their prize. Some honourable mentions go out to Mr. Rousselle's Grade 8s with 707 items and Ms. LB's Grade 11 Physics class with 673 items (between 23 students).
Finally, the House with the most items collected went to Brother Xavier. This keeps them in the lead for the House Cup!
Thank you to the whole community as we again demonstrate our concern and commitment to the service of the poor locally and internationally.
