Each year the College community pulls together during the Advent season to collect money and food for two organizations. The first is a local social service agency in the downtown core of the city of Toronto. The "Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd" – a religious order dedicated to the service to the poor and marginalized run the Good Shepherd Centre. The Centre is a multi-service centre that provides 91 emergency shelter beds, serves over 1000 hot meals daily, and offers support to the homeless and those impacted by substance abuse. The second is an international organization called Mary's Meals. They provide food for children who live in some of the world's most impoverished communities when they come to school.
As you can imagine, during these challenging times, we had no idea what the results would be this year with limited collection days and only online money donations. With little fanfare and only a few announcements, we hoped for the best. We are delighted to say that even with so much uncertainty, we were still able to fill a truck with donated food items, and we raised over $2800 for our two charities!
The Lower school classes competed against each other in a friendly competition, and the upper school classes competed as learning groups and donated whenever they could. In addition, we still tracked donations according to Houses to promote school spirit. In total, the school raised over 6300 combined items and dollars. Congratulations to Br. Michael and Br. Gabriel Houses, who brought in the most money and food per student, and to Ms. Wunder (8E) and Ms. Marchese (5B) for being the top classes with 39 items per student each. Thank you to the Lasallian Youth Team and the whole De La Salle community as we again demonstrate our concern and commitment to the service of the poor at home and abroad.
