Student Life

More than just a school — the Lasallian commitment to forming the whole student.

“By the care you take of your students show that you have a real love for them.”

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Student Life Image 2

The Lasallian practice of educating the whole student: mentally, spiritually, and physically extends beyond the classroom.

We focus on five major areas:

Co-curricular program

Encouraging clubs, sports, and service programs to foster personal growth.

Service / Leadership

Opportunities to develop leadership skills through meaningful service.

De La Salle House System

Building teamwork and school spirit through house-based activities.

School community

Creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

Student independence

Fostering responsibility and self-reliance in everyday learning.

Focusing on these areas gives our students the best opportunity to become well-rounded individuals by having them learn and grow beyond the classroom.

How it Works

Monthly House Leader Meetings

MONTHLY HOUSE LEADER MEETINGS
House Leaders meet on campus at 7:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. Together with teacher moderators, they brainstorm ideas, plan events, and collaborate with leaders from other Houses.
Recent meetings have focused on creating new homeroom activities based on student interests.

Homeroom Activities

HOMEROOM ACTIVITIES
During homeroom, House Leaders run icebreakers, team-building challenges, and quick games that help students connect across grades. This year’s activities have included Shazam, a Halloween door-decorating contest, a gingerbread house competition, and a school-wide food drive. Students also completed two fitness challenges, earning individual points for their House.

School-Wide Events and House Points

SCHOOL-WIDE EVENTS & HOUSE POINTS
Students can earn additional House points by participating in larger school events such as Terry Fox Day, ShareLife Day, and monthly Fun Friday activities. Points are awarded for strong participation and top placements, fostering friendly competition and school spirit.

Del Community

The chapel is ideally located on the main floor of the school building and is a sacred place that all staff and students can visit throughout the day. When daily class masses are not in session, teachers can accompany their classes in the chapel for some quiet prayer or reflection time. The chapel is also available to students during their Independent Learning Time as they may either join another class for mass or visit the chapel to pray quietly on their own.

Community time is a one time a week opportunity for students to participate in an activity they enjoy with peers. Over the course of three terms, each different term we offer a sports, art and other choice. Students are able to pick and build friends in a community environment built around an activity they'll enjoy!

All students at De La Salle begin their day in homeroom. Homerooms have been structured in way so that students in grades 9-12 are combined in the same homeroom and are divided using the house system. Generally, student will keep the same homeroom teacher and maintain the same group of students during their four years of high school.

Homeroom is an additional opportunity for students and teachers to further strengthen the De La Salle community where weekly and monthly activities are planned. Moreover, major school wide competitions such as the food drive, clothing drive and ShareLife Day are facilitated by teachers in homeroom. Homeroom also allows students to meet with and develop friendships with students outside of their respective grade levels.

Student Independence

Independent learning time allows the students the opportunity to make their own decisions on how they can customize and further their education. All students in Grades 11-12 will have ILT scheduled throughout their day.

During their ILT, students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the following:

All students in Junior School experience a daily recess. Whether they're in grade 5 or all the way up in grade 8, we believe students to maximize their learning need a break in their day to relax and have fun with their peers. We ask a lot of our students in the classroom so in moments like recess it's important to allow our students to have a break, reset and be a kid with their friends so that when they go back into class they're refreshed and ready to learn.

"From the first time we visited Del we knew it was a special School. The constant dedication from all of its staff as well as parental support makes Del unique. We feel honoured for being part of the Del family, and are most certain our son is not only receiving an extraordinary education but Del is also teaching him the life skills he needs to become a confident and responsible young adult." -Ana Beltran and Thomas Berger, Parents

"Outside the classroom provides even more experiences that enrich student life. One spring, the arts department was approached to paint a mural on a fence along a nearby church. In the end, a group of our Gr. 10 students dedicated themselves after school to this large and colourful project featuring Noah's Ark complete with animals. It still stands today as a testament to our students' dedication and creativity." -Mr. Lue Tam, Coordinator of the Arts Department
