December Reflection from Brother Domenic

Evolution of Catholic Education
The evolution of Catholic education in our own country and Province reveals a particularly strong interest in ensuring that young Catholics have had access to good Catholic elementary and secondary schools. Historically, we know that Catholic elementary schools were funded even before the days of Confederation. Secondary schools which developed more slowly came into existence as religious orders dedicated to teaching made their way into English-speaking Canada. Both the Catholic hierarchy and parents were the driving force behind the establishment of Catholic schools here, and more especially in the United States where Catholic schools still represent to this day the largest private school system in the world.

Congratulations to our Athletes
Once again, we have had even more successes to celebrate. Last week we gathered after assembly for our Fall Athletic Awards Assembly. We congratulate all of our talented athletes recognized and extend our deepest gratitude to all of our coaches who took time to mentor and work with our fine, young students.

Important Reminders

Inclement Weather and School Closure Policy
As we begin to start experiencing typical winter weather, it is imperative that all families familiarize themselves with De La Salle's School Closure Policy -Emergencies and Inclement Weather Conditions. To view a copy, please click here.

Winter Uniform Policy
As we prepare for the inclement weather and the upcoming Winter season, we would like to inform the Parent and Student Community that the Winter Uniform will be in effect as of November 10th. Students will be permitted to arrive and leave school with their solid-coloured Rain or Winter boots. Arrival to and from school with tracks pants that are worn under the kilt must be black or grey Del Apparel or Del Spirit Wear.

Used Skates and Helmets
We are kindly asking that families who have lightly used and outgrown helmets and/or skates consider donating these items to Del's Physical Education Program. The great advantage that our PE students have at Del is the access to the arena, and therefore all PE classes will spend a unit on the ice. For many students this will be the first and only time they require this equipment. If you would like to donate helmets or skates, you can bring them to Scott Barber in the Arena in the mornings, no later than December 20. Thank you for your generosity.

News From The Library

The 2017/2018 Academic Year got off to a great start. The new Library layout is spacious and welcoming, and the students really like the new lounge chairs. As you can see from the photograph the new chairs are well used.

There is more good news! The number of books being borrowed and read by students has increased by an astounding 600.588% over last year. The students are so excited about reading and this is wonderful news.

The Grade 5 and 6 students have been trained on the Britannica Database. The Grade 7 classes will be having their session in the next 2 weeks.

With the encouragement of the School Administration and the generous support of the Parent's Association I have been able completely update our catalogue and bring in new books and materials.

Thank you for making the De La Salle Library a great place to be.
