"The purpose of this Institute is to give a human and Christian Education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it."  (Rule of the Brothers of the Christian Schools)

Dear Parents and Guardians:

It is both my duty and pleasure to come to you again this year to ask your assistance in providing a financial gift to the school and its important mission of educating the young.

We have much to be grateful for this year, in particular, as we mark 167 years of educational presence in the City of Toronto.  As well, I would like to point out that this academic year marks an important milestone as we have now operated the College as a fully independent school for twenty-five years after having withdrawn from the publicly-funded Catholic system as of June 1994.  Although the first few years were not easy, the school has progressed in so many ways since those early days.

When the school re-privatised, the governing structure and the administration of the College decided to address several essential aspects of the over-all school programme.  First, the ability to hire committed teachers and staff who supported fully the Catholic and Lasallian mission of the school.  Second, to provide a co-educational option for Catholic youth in the GTA.  Third, the importance of ensuring that students from all socio-economic groups had a place at the College. Fourth, the re-introduction of a strong liberal arts curriculum that included, as had been the tradition at De La Salle, an advanced curriculum for intermediate level students.  There are, of course, many other elements of the transition to independent status that I could mention.  I do want to single out one aspect of the school that is not always stated so explicitly.  It is my belief that the young people who have attended the school, as it has been re-created, will prove to be the very people who will be able to make real change in our society and bring to the world beyond De La Salle a genuine effort of restoring Christian principles which lead to personal and societal conversion.

So many of our alumni/ae have, in fact, become tremendous ambassadors of the school.  They have, and continue to make a difference.  We are proud of our alums and we are proud that our current students have now taken up this task of being witnesses and signs of faith to others.

Why make a financial gift to our Annual Fund?

a.  Over 16% of the school population receives tuition assistance this academic year.  It is our hope to continue expanding our scholarships and bursaries to ensure this opportunity is available and accessible to qualified students.

b.  The tuition fees at the College are 50% to 25% lower than all major competitors.  The College is committed to keeping tuition fees in reach of as many families as possible.

c.  The school has succeeded in operating without a deficit for over twenty years.  Hard work and sound management are a guarantee to ensure the school's future and provide a stream of revenue in the decades ahead.

d.  The Brothers of the Christian Schools permitted the sale of property to assist with the completion of the Capital Campaign.  The improvement and expansion of our facilities have not been passed on to the parental community through increasing tuition fees.

Our society needs what, I believe, we have to offer.  I invite you to help us along the journey by joining with the entire De La Salle community to assist current and future generations of DEL students, young men and women, who after having benefitted from the totality of the educational experience here, bring hope and service to others with courage and compassion.

May God bless you for your generosity.

Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever.

Yours respectfully,
