In Grades 5 through 8, visual arts constitute a regular part of a De La Salle student's afternoon rotary program. They receive 40 minutes of quality instruction in visual arts every other day. Students explore a variety of 2-D and 3-D media in creating original work. They can also be seen in the spring drawing outside around the picturesque campus.
Students may then continue their visual art studies at the Senior School level. Grade 9 features drawing, painting, and relief printmaking. In Grade 10, students are exposed to design, acrylic painting, and plaster casting. In Grade 11, photography, intaglio, and assemblage are also offered in the regular Visual Arts stream or our Media Arts option. By Grade 12, the course is equally divided between an individualised studio program and the study of art history. In addition, graduating students have the opportunity to submit a portfolio for AP Studio Art evaluation and accreditation.
The visual arts students contribute to the year-end, week-long Arts Festival. An exhibition of art work produced by Grade 5 to 11 students are on display throughout the week in the main building. The graduating class mounts their own polished show in the Heritage House as well. Another venue for exposure is the online gallery of student art found in this section.
Other opportunities abound for the students to further utilise their artistic skills. To name a few examples, the Art Club meets weekly to create work that goes beyond the classroom; the Yearbook Staff devotes a year to the collection of memories; fruits of the students' labour can be seen in permanent murals inside and outside the school; each June, local elementary school pupils are invited for a one-day workshop in music, drama, and visual arts.
The Visual Arts flourish indeed at De La Salle, and art is an important part of student life.
