The Music Department at De La Salle is a performance-based, concert-band (brass, woodwind and percussion) program. We offer seven concert bands, two jazz bands and two choirs. Playing in an ensemble of this nature may very well be the largest team your child is involved with. It requires dedication, commitment, self-discipline and teamwork with all students working towards a common goal in order to produce a high quality performance.
All students perform in two concerts at the school, the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert.
Every year the graduating class completes the program with their Recital Night. This occurs during Del's week-long Arts Festival and counts as their final exam. The students select their own repertoire, rehearse with an accompanist and perform in front of their parents and friends in the Heritage House. They are marked by an independent adjudicator on their performance, Dr. Cameron Walter. Dr. Walter is the head of the Education Department at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music.
In addition to their daily programming, the grades 5 & 6 students attend mandatory Junior Choir practise once a week. Del also has an optional Senior Choir for students in grades 7-12. Both choirs perform at all of the concerts and masses held at the College. They have also participated in the Ontario Vocal Association’s choir festivals on numerous occasions. Many of these students have prominent roles in Theatre De La Salle's annual productions.
Students from Grades 7-12 participate in the Ontario Band Association Festival in February held in Thornhill. Students from Grades 10-12 have the honour of marching in the Toronto Santa Claus Parade held annually in November. This year we had over 100 band members and cadets corps participating. Twice a year, November and February, students may perform in a Coffee House held in the music room, as well as Lasallian Idol held during our Share Life Day. These events allow the students to show off their other talents, be it singing, playing piano or playing in a rock band.
The grade 11 & 12 students also participate in the Heritage Festival. This is a US-based competition that draws schools from all over the world. Del has competed in this for the past 10 years travelling to New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and Orlando. Our students have done extremely well receiving 6 Golds and 4 Silvers and are going for their 4th Gold in a row in April 2016 in Orlando.
The Government of Ontario has ordered the closure of all independent schools and non-essential businesses due to the rapidly evolving developments related to COVID-19. De La Salle College is following this directive and has shut down access to its campus until further notice.
