A Recap of the U-14 Girls Soccer Championship

The U14 Girls soccer team finished up their regular season with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses which earned the girls a second-place finish and a spot in the finals.

On May 25th our Del girls played their championship match against Toronto French School on home turf. Our previous two meetings with TFS ended in 4-0 and 3-0 defeats, so the girls were looking to get even in the CISSA finals. TFS, on the other hand, were undefeated without giving up a single goal all year. Del started the game on the front foot by pressing TFS, and the defense was led by Julia Emanoilidis. The odd time that it looked as if TFS would break through, they were met by the unbelievable bravery of the Del Keeper Kate Murray, as she would dive out at the ball, sacrificing her body to shut down the TFS attackers.

The score remained tied until, with about 5 minutes left in the half, TFS capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net, putting them ahead at the halftime whistle. Over halftime, Del changed their formation, and they were back at it to start the second half. With 2 attackers up front now, Del hounded their defense, causing turnover after turnover. About midway through the half, the tenacity of the team pressure allowed Siena Pirisi to pick up a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box. The team MVP dribbled past the defenders and fired home the tying goal. Del had now proven to themselves, and to the crowd that formed in the stands, that TFS were not invincible. Regulation ended without anything between the two sides.

After a very conservative Extra Time played by both teams, the finals would be settled in a penalty shootout. After the first 6 shooters for both teams had shot, the score was tied 5-5.  Nothing separated the two teams until TFS missed their 7th shot which gave Del the chance to win. The team’s Markle Award winner, Olivia Rossi, stepped up and calmly deposited the winning penalty into the bottom left corner, as Del defeated the undefeated TFS 6-5.

Coach Iantosca and Coach Salem are so proud of the grit and never say die attitude our girls showed all year and especially in the Finals.

Congratulations to our 2022 U14 CISSA girls soccer champs!
